Who are we?

Beyond Methane RVA is a group of Richmond community members committed to improving both the financial welfare of our city and the sustainability of our environment. The technologies now available for our energy needs are not only less costly in the long run but less destructive to our health and less damaging to the environment.

The group is a project of the Electrify RVA Campaign (originally initiated by the Sierra Club Falls of the James Group). Our primary focus is to help residents of the Richmond area understand the sometimes complex health, safety, climate and financial concerns that come with our dependence on methane (aka natural gas). A large part of this effort involves Richmond Gas Works — the city-owned utility seeking to overcome the downsides of its aging infrastructure and transition its energy systems into the 21st century. Beyond Methane RVA educates the public on all aspects of this complex process — from identifying local gas leaks to explaining home energy upgrades and alternative energy sources.
